OPPO has announced ColorOS 17, a new version of its smartphone operating system that introduces a revamped UI, better performance, and an expanded suite of AI features. The update aims to make everyday smartphone tasks more seamless, while letting users accomplish more complex tasks via AI helpers.
This new design way of thinking, called Living Flow Design is the most significant change you’ll see in the new operating systemtranslucent elements, smooth animations, and flowing effects throughout the system. The interface elements of menus, buttons, and even notifications panels can extend, contract, and react to touch.
The new design also further improves the lock screen, control centre and media player. Light and depth effects help to differentiate interface components without requiring entirely solid backgrounds or statically animated content.
Luminous Rendering Engine here, the light rendering engine uses a new unified rendering architecture, which can avoid duplicate and wasteful processing. OPPO said that the rendering burden can be reduced by up to 30%, and the RAM load of rendering-related operations can be reduced by up to 25% in some cases.
OPPO further claims an increase in app-launch stability, as well as gallery thumbnail loading. In lab testing, where conditions mimicked six years of usage, devices maintained more than 90% of their initial smoothness, based on the company, even with 90% storage capacity. These are manufacturer-provided figures, and real-world results vary by device and user.
One of the major additions is Agent Mode within AI Mind Pilot. Instead of simply answering questions, the assistant can coordinate multiple steps to complete tasks using information stored on the phone, with the user’s permission.
For example, you can ask it to look up travel reservations, retrieve related documents and assemble them into an itinerary. It can look for pictures of a particular trip and organize them into albums, and assemble creative assets like covers for a video blog.
OPPO has collaborated with Manus to bring agent-enabled features to this experience. OPPO has also enabled interactions with AI services like ChatGPT, Google Gemini and Perplexity through its AI Mind experiences, with models and functionalities that may vary based on devices and regions.
The AI tools could be mostly valuable for users who have more files and photos than they can keep track of on their phones. They will be most valuable to the extent the AI can produce accurate results, the results have the necessary permissions, and the AI consistently performs multi-step tasks.
For example, the tool can generate suggestions for improving the image given the scene and subject, and the Style Match function takes a reference image and mimics its colour palette, tone, and visual feeling. This could help people create more consistent shots to share on social media or keep for themselves.
. Availability will be country-specific and some features will roll out over time. In addition, the AI-generated edits will require a review, mostly for images where accuracy is important.
The newly better AI Mind Space is also able to save documents and video links. It recognises what they are about, makes the information search-able, and groups related material together into Memory Collections.
