Nikon has added a new camera in its mirrorless lineup — the Z f — to cater to those who like to shoot film. The new camera incorporates the iconic design of the retro FM2 film camera while featuring a full-frame sensor and EXPEED 7 image-processing engine, the same as those found in the flagship Nikon Z 9 and Z 8 cameras. The Z f offers powerful features such as 14-fps burst shooting with AF tracking, 4K/30p video recording, and more.
The 24.5-megapixel full-frame backside-illuminated CMOS image sensor at the Z’s core is the same as in the Nikon Z 9 and the Z 8. It’s coupled with the EXPEED 7 engine, which has been tweaked to provide superior image quality and fast shooting speeds. The processor also includes several unique functions, such as a dedicated monochrome mode to give photographers a master way to get black-and-white images without extra work.
On the video front, the Z f can record 4K 30p video that is oversampled from 6K and also shoots DX-format HD at 60p and 1080p at 120 fps. It supports in-camera 10-bit H.265 recording for higher-quality video with reduced file size and has a fully articulating LCD. It can also shoot pixel shift images by capturing 4, 8, 16, or 32 images and then combining them to create one larger, higher-resolution image.
Lastly, the Z f can capture various colors and tones with a new feature called Rich Tone Portraits. It’s designed to capture more details of darker skin tones and give a more balanced color rendition. Nikon didn’t offer much more detail on the specifics of this feature during the briefing, but it’s a welcome addition to the camera lineup and should help make for better-looking photos and videos.
The Z f will be available in six colorways, from classic black to Indigo Blue and Bordeaux Red. It also has an option for premium exteriors, including embossed artificial leather sections over the grip and around the monitor and brass dials on top that can develop a unique look over time. The camera is also weather-proofed to operate down to 0 degrees Celsius. The Z f has a USB-C port for data output and charging, a microphone and headphone jack, and a dual memory card slot to handle both SD and XQD cards. It can also be wirelessly paired with Android and iOS devices via the free Nikon SnapBridge app. The camera will be available starting October 26 for Rs. 29,990. More information on the camera can be found on the official Nikon website.
